White Linen Drapery and the French Return Rod

This is a classic combination for window treatments. It is elegant, yet simple and classic. Here are some smart picks if you go with this look. This is a very easy choice to pull off throughout your entire home. I’ve included some very affordable options here. There are a few things to note.

  1. If you choose a sheer, you will likely need to double up on panels. Meaning, for one window you’ll need 4 panels, 2 for each side. Also, sheers will not block light. They are purely decorative. You will never close them.

  2. Make sure you choose the right length. Want to know how to hang curtain rods? Have questions like, “How far should curtain rod extend past window?” or “How high to hang to put curtain rod?” The diagram below is simple to understand. The worst mistake you can make is trying to make curtains that are too short work. You are better off buying longer and hemming them.

3. Don’t get a grommet top. They look dated. Go for a back tab, pinch pleat or rod pocket and use clips and rings.

4. The beautiful thing about a French Return Rod is that it is a very classic style, but if you’re concerned about light coming in the sides this is a perfect solution. The French Return actually curves and “returns” into the wall, thus allowing the curtain panel to connect with the wall.
