The Easiest and Most Inexpensive Ways to Redecorate
Everyone needs to refresh their space from time to time. Some of us feel a need to do it more than others. The best way to decorate is to not get caught up in trends. If you do like something trendy, always get the less expensive version because chances are as soon as the trend wears off, your love for that item will as well. Here are my tips for redecorating without spending a lot of money.
Best Tips for Redecorating
Pillow covers
I’m guilty. I change my pillows in my living room a few times a year. I don’t necessarily do it according to season or holiday, but that just happens to be the time of year when I feel like I need a change.
Purchase covers only. It’s less wasteful and better quality. Do NOT get sucked in to buying pillows at Home Goods and Target every time they get new product. Invest in quality inserts and switch out covers. Remember to purchase inserts that are one size larger than your pillows so they stay looking filled and firm instead of floppy. For instance, purchase a 20x20 insert for a 18x18 cover. You can find fabulous covers on Etsy and very inexpensive ones on Amazon.
Feeling adventurous? Make your own pillow covers! You guys, I DO NOT SEW. But, I make a lot of pillow covers myself using fabric glue! Purchase fabrics by the yard, cut to size, glue inside out and voila…new pillows.
Designer Tip: These covers are knock offs of designer fabric. They are very inexpensive. I do not recommend spending a lot of money on a designer fabric pillow cover, unless you plan on using it for a lifetime. Invest in high quality down inserts. Give yourself new pillows by only purchasing inexpensive covers and switch them out a few times a year for a brand new look in your living room!
Rug
Rugs used to be a very expensive investment if you wanted something quality. Surprisingly, a rug is now one of the less expensive investment to make regarding your décor. Of course, in general you get what you pay for, but if you know what to look for you do not need to spend a lot on a new rug for your space. Stick with a natural fiber, neutral print or solid wool and you can’t go wrong.
Paint
I’ve never understood why homeowners are so afraid of paint. Sure, if you hire someone to do the work it could be a large investment. I get that. But, if it’s one room, do it yourself and you don’t have much to lose. I’ve been painting my own homes for years. I’ve only hired a painter two times in my life. One time, I had to have an entire house of wallpaper removed. I was also pregnant and it was a home I had purchased but had yet to move into. It made way more sense to hire someone. I also had a painter when I finished my current home’s basement. Again, made more sense because it was a new build area. But, for a one room at a time type of decorating that doesn’t have vaulted ceilings, do it yourself. The worst that can happen is you hate the color and end up painting over it. Do yourself a favor and research colors or hire a designer (me) to do a color consultation before making that final choice.
Change a light fixture.
Light fixtures often date a space. They go through a lot of trends. Choose something classic and you won’t feel the need to do this but every 8-10 years or so. If you have something you hate or just isn’t your style, change it out. Believe it or not, this is not difficult to do. There are plenty of how-to videos if you are up for it. Just make sure you turn the power off before messing with any wiring! Not sure what to do here? I have several other blog posts on lighting you can read for inspo.
Less is more.
Try taking taking all decorative accessories out of your room and start fresh. I’m not saying buy all new decor. Put everything you already have together in one area. Choose your largest or most favorite item to work around. Don’t get too cluttered. More is not more. Not sure what to use as a start? You can NEVER go wrong with a large houseplant or fresh flowers. If you end up with several items you don’t love or seem a bit aged, sell them on Facebook Marketplace for a few extra bucks!
Designer Tip: When purchasing accessories GO BIG. The general rule is don’t buy anything smaller than a pineapple.
Of course there are many other simple things you can do when redecorating your home. This is a good place to start though and will make a big impact without a hug price tag!
