Entertaining guests for the holidays?

Hosting a holiday dinner is one thing, but having overnight company is another. I know, I’ve almost always lived far away from family. I haven’t been entertaining for holidays in the past few years because well you know, we had a little pandemic. But it’s also one of the few times we can travel without taking kids out of school and we have family in Charleston, SC which is one of our favorite places, so we’ve been doing that the past few years. I’m also going to confess here…I don’t like turkey dinner for Thanksgiving. I know, it sounds wrong. We tend to do Friendsgiving out at a restaurant and we order either steak or seafood! Okay, don’t hate me! Life is too short to eat food you don’t like.

Anywho…when having overnight guests, you want them to be comfortable obviously. Here’s how to do it.

Remember the most important thing is that your guests get a good night sleep during their visit. No one can enjoy their time without proper rest.

  • Linen sheets are great to ensure that hot sleepers are comfortable. You can provide extra blankets for those that may get cold. Apparently these from Barefoot Dreams are amazing!

  • A variety of pillows. Some like feather, some don’t.

  • Extra soft, full towels. We all have a different idea of how often to use a towel, so it’s better to have too many for your guest.

  • Fan. If you don’t have a ceiling fan in the room your guests are staying, get a small fan. Temperature control is important. Also, the fan can provide white noise which is nice when you’re away from home.

  • Clock. We don’t want to dwell on the time, but people like to know what time it is. It’s better to have a small clock on a nightstand rather than making your guests use their phone.

  • Bedside lamp. No one wants to get out of bed to turn on and off an overhead light.

  • Water carafe and glass. These are nice because the glass is placed on the top so no dust particles drop in the pitcher.

  • Reading material. There’s really no point in having multiple novels to read. No one should be finishing a novel while they’re visiting you. I like to have a book of short stories, a beautiful book with photos of interiors or gardens or a couple of travel magazines for light reading.

  • Diffuser. You don’t an overpowering scent, but a nice, fresh lavender will do the trick.

  • Basket of toiletries. When I travel, I don’t use the provided hotel toiletries. I do however, take them home and use them in my guest bath. I always include ibuprofen, antacid, Toothbrush, Toothpaste, hair ties and the other hotel items I collect.

  • Trash can.

  • Tissues.

  • Mirror. Full length is nice. Everyone likes to know what they look like head to toe.

  • Luggage rack.

  • Hangers in closet.

  • Clean surface for placing loose items or a catchall dish.

  • Bonus…fresh flowers and a phone charger!
