Decorating Mistakes

Part 1 The Bookshelf

When styling a bookshelf, it's all about creating balance and harmony through thoughtful arrangement.

  1. Start by editing down your book collection, considering both aesthetics and practicality. Once you have curated a selection of standout books, intersperse them with carefully chosen decorative objects such as sculptures, vases, or framed artwork. Remember to remove book jackets and try to keep some consistency with color choices.

  2. Play with varying heights, stacking some books horizontally and vertically, to add visual interest. Use bookends to separate different sections and create organization.

  3. Don't forget to incorporate elements of texture and color through planters, woven baskets or other interesting accessories.

  4. Finally, step back and reassess the overall composition, ensuring that each shelf tells a story, while maintaining a sense of cohesion throughout the entire bookshelf. With a keen eye and a creative touch, you can transform your bookshelf into a work of art, capturing the essence of a pro.

Don’t stress over this and make it too difficult. Less is more. The biggest mistake one makes is too many small objects making the shelves appear cluttered. Below are some examples.

Colors are neutral with some interesting organically shaped accessories.

This shelf is a bit cluttered looking. There are too many small objects that are distracting.

The focus here is coastal blue, white and green. Just enough accessories and books.

This shelf works so well because the repeated items create a cohesiveness. Do you have a collection? Display it like this, all together in a bookshelf.
