Classic home decor trends that will never go out of style

I’m calling these ideas “trends” because their popularity comes and goes, but in actuality, they never go out of style. I usually do not pay close attention to trends in design. I just like what I like whether it be something new or classic. All of the things mentioned in this article can be incorporated into any style at any time. So, when they’re on-trend and therefore less expensive and more widely available don’t be afraid to purchase because they are items you can keep for a lifetime and they will never really go out of style.

1. White kitchen.

While you may hear that white kitchens are on their way out, I disagree. There is something about a clean, white kitchen that serves as a clean palette to cook and gather. Even though I do love a white kitchen, they can come across as boring if not executed correctly. You have to add hints of color and texture/pattern here and there. Use a fun backsplash, paint the ceiling, paint your island, get show-stopping lighting, or a colorful rug. Below are some ways to dress up a white kitchen. Notice the backsplash choices, lower cabinet variety, hardware, color, and ceiling treatment to add interest.

2. Stainless appliances.

Ok. So this is sort of an old trend so much so that it’s not really a trend anymore which is why you cannot go wrong with stainless. It has become a classic since it was introduced years ago. There have been some trendy appliance options that have recently come out like the GE cafe line. While attractive right now, this is what I see as being a trend. Unless you are sure you will love it until your appliances bite the dust, opt for stainless always.

3. Natural weave baskets.

Oftentimes baskets are associated with farmhouse or beach style. All kinds of baskets have been used for storage and decor for as long as I can remember. It’s not a trend. What is a trend is in the style of basket, not the material itself so be careful when you purchase baskets that are not a classic weave if you want to use them for years to come. Honestly, I have baskets I purchased from Pottery Barn back in 2006 that I still use in my main living area for all to see. I actually think they still sell them. Baskets are such a great way to add extra storage, neutral color, and pattern with texture.

These are some pretty classic, casual style baskets, yet remain timeless.

4. Kitchen island.

Again this may seem like a trend, considering kitchens never used to have them. However, as the human race has evolved, the woman isn’t the only one cooking anymore, families are busier than ever and kitchens are no longer tucked away and only used for cooking and meals. The kitchen is the hub of the house. It’s really the only space that everyone uses multiple times a day. You should always consider your kitchen the most important area of your home. It is likely where you and your family members and guests alike spend the most amount of time. The island has become standard in most new builds these days. It can act almost as a built in piece of furniture. Often times I use mine as a desk. In fact, I sit at my kitchen island right now as I write this. Family can sit and grab a quick bite to eat, do homework, entertain guests while you cook and not to mention it adds lots of extra storage and counter space for cooking and prepping. If your house doesn’t have one, you can always purchase a free standing island and still use it for extra counter space and seating. You may even be able to find a beautiful handmade antique piece to use as an island.

5. Bamboo Furniture.

Yes, rattan, wicker, and bamboo are super popular right now. But, bamboo has never gone out of style. Bamboo adds a natural wood that is unique and different from other woods. Obviously, you don’t want to put it everywhere but outdoor furniture or a chair, shelf, or table that’s bamboo is timeless. Opt for a classic shape when you purchase to avoid it looking trendy. It’s not the material that is the trend, it’s the style of the furniture that can date it.

6. Animal prints, capiz, bone inlay, and tortoiseshell.

Ok, so I saved the very best for last here! All of these finishes/patterns add a level of classic chicness that I am passionate about. Yes, you can have too many of these things, so the most important thing to remember is to not overdo it. In order for it to be classic chic, it’s in the details. Just one animal print, capiz shell, bone inlay, or tortoiseshell in a room is perfect. Can you mix them and do one of each? Yes, you can! You just have to vary the sizing and how prominent the material is. For instance, if you have a zebra-striped rug, that is a pretty bold statement but that doesn’t mean you can’t add a capiz shell overhead light, a small tortoiseshell vase, and a piece of furniture with a beautiful bone inlay pattern. Decor should be fun and what is more fun than these?
